Morton Hospital to go 100% Tobacco-Free on April 1

Posted on 02/22/2012

On April 1, Morton Hospital will join a statewide initiative supported by the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) and the Department of Public Health (DPH) to go 100 percent tobacco-free.  As a tobacco-free campus, the hospital will strictly prohibit the use of tobacco (including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and all other tobacco products) by hospital staff, patients and visitors anywhere on the hospital grounds and at satellite facilities.

According to the most recent data collected by the MHA, 58 percent of hospitals in the Commonwealth have self-reported that they have fully achieved tobacco-free status, and many other hospitals are well on their way to adopting similar policies at their facilities.

The hospital has received significant support from staff members, physicians and community partners, as many believe the time for change has come. “This is a policy change that is long overdue,” said Kelly Hoye, MD, Morton Hospital medical director and member of the hospital’s Tobacco-Free Campus Committee.

As part of the initiative, the hospital has begun offering smoking cessation resources and education to employees. The hospital will host its next American Cancer Society Freshstart™ smoking cessation program beginning on Wednesday, March 14. This program is free and open to the public. To pre-register, please call the Morton Hospital Health Service Referral Line at (508) 828-7777.
