Steward Health Care System Finalizes Acquisitions of Morton Hospital and Medical Center and Quincy Medical Center

Posted on 10/01/2011

Steward Health Care System LLC (Steward) today announced that it has completed the acquisitions of Morton Hospital and Medical Center (Morton) and Quincy Medical Center (Quincy).  The transactions had already been reviewed and approved by the MA Attorney General and the MA Department of Public Health.  The Morton acquisition was also approved by the MA Supreme Judicial Court.

“Morton and Quincy will be important parts of our fully integrated community care organization,” said Ralph de la Torre, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Steward.  “Our capital investments in these hospitals will allow their medical staff and employees to enhance the quality of care they deliver to their patients.”

Steward is the largest fully integrated community care organization in New England.  Steward’s goal is to keep clinically appropriate care in the community.  To achieve this goal, Steward is investing hundreds of millions of dollars of capital into its hospitals.  This investment in technology, infrastructure and equipment is designed to provide patients high quality care at Steward hospitals without having to travel to downtown Boston.  As a result of these acquisitions Steward will:

  • Provide capital for ongoing clinical and infrastructure projects at Morton and Quincy.
  • Preserve jobs at Morton and Quincy.
  • Maintain the current levels of free care and community benefits at both of these hospitals.
  • In addition, patients at Quincy and Morton will have access to a large local network of primary care physicians and specialists.

“Joining Steward gives us the capital we need to update our facilities and technology so we can deliver the best possible care to the people of Greater Taunton,” said Maureen Bryant, Chief Executive Officer of Morton.

“Becoming a Steward hospital will enable us to achieve long-term financial stability and ensures that Quincy Medical Center will be here to meet the future health care needs of the community,” said Mark O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer of Quincy.
