Our Center has the overlying philosophy that we must treat the whole woman, not just her breast cancer. This starts when a woman walks through our doors. The most frightening day for any woman is when she finds a breast lump or hears that something is wrong with her mammogram. Women are often terrified when they come into the office. Therefore, the environment is designed to exude calmness and relaxation. Our waiting area resembles a living room more than a surgeon’s office. Soothing colors paint the walls, beautiful lamps sit on the side tables and two wingback chairs give the waiting room a more comfortable look. We try to help people feel a little more at ease.
The next goal is to try to give a woman back hope and control. We start this process with information. The more you know, the more control you have. You will have time to discuss everything with your surgeon and will have the opportunity to meet with our nurse navigator to get more information to read at home.
Next, we develop a plan to fight the breast cancer that fits both the woman and her cancer. A multidisciplinary tumor board reviews each case and develops a well thought out recommendation. Plans include access to current trials, protocols and state-of-the-art procedures. These options are reviewed thoroughly with each woman. She then helps us mold each treatment plan into one that best fits her life.
Our Center also has a nurse navigator to coordinate each person’s journey. She will help smooth out financial concerns, help with work issues and set up any support a woman may need. She will provide information on all of the support programs offered by either our program or the American Cancer Society. If you are interested in supplementing your medical care through alternative healing practices, she will help you access these programs.
Overall, we have tried to develop a breast care program that offers the highest quality of care with an eye toward treating the whole woman, not just her cancer.
