The Women's Imaging Center

Breast ultrasound is another technique used to evaluate breast health. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create a visual image of the breast, thereby allowing the radiologist to determine whether a lump is solid or a fluid-filled cyst.

Morton Hospital has a stereotactic biopsy system. Morton interventional radiologists use this minimally invasive equipment to perform core biopsies, a technique that may eliminate the need for more invasive surgery. The stereotactic system offers a safe, efficient alternative to surgery in appropriate candidates. A biopsy can be performed in the Women's Diagnostic Imaging Center under local anesthesia. With this needle technique, the process is less invasive, but still yields enough tissue to determine whether a breast lesion is benign or malignant. A computer helps guide the needle to the site of the lesion, where breast tissue is extracted. The result is less surgery for benign lesions and better surgical planning for malignancies.
