Morton Hospital Nurse Navigator Provides a Guiding Hand to Cancer Patients

Morton Hospital recently expanded the role of the Cancer Care Nurse Navigator.  The Nurse Navigator provides a higher level of care and guidance for patients who are battling cancer. In this position, Ginny Starvish, RN guides cancer patients through the healthcare system and helps them gain access to the various cancer services that are available to them within the community.  She also helps patients cope with their diagnosis and guides them and their families on the psycho-social part of cancer.

“A diagnosis of cancer can be difficult enough without the added strain of moving through the healthcare system without support,” Starvish said. “Patients who are dealing with cancer have many resources available to them in the community, but most are not aware of the existence of those resources that can help them through the treatment process tremendously. We are here to help connect them with those services.”

The Nurse Navigator aides patients with a wide array of services, including:

  • Coordinating insurance issues
  • Helping to locate transportation or child care services
  • Arranging for physical therapy and follow up care
  • Providing nutrition counseling
  • Locating assistance from social services
  • Finding support groups for patients to attend

In fact, a network of transportation options is currently being developed for patients who need ride assistance to get to and from appointments. Starvish began developing this network of drivers after discovering that one of the major obstacles for patients who were undergoing treatment was finding transportation to out-of-town appointments.

Starvish brings many years of experience as an RN in the greater Taunton community. She has worked as the Urology Nurse Specialist at Morton Hospital since 1999, and later became a nurse in Morton Hospital’s Emergency Department.

If a patient is faced with a cancer diagnosis, Morton Hospital’s Nurse Navigator will be there to guide them through the treatment process more easily, and provide them the support that they need and desire.
