Physical therapy
assesses the patient’s level of function through testing range of motion, strength, balance, and mobility. Physical therapy consultations are ordered by the physician if there is a concern about the patient’s mobility status or safety. Treatment is geared toward maximizing a patient’s mobility and safety, recommending additional care that might be needed (short- or long-term placement, homecare, or outpatient services), and providing guidance in the utilization of assistive devices (walkers, crutch, canes).

Occupational therapy
assesses the patient’s ability to perform normal activities of daily living such as dressing, washing and overall care. Occupational therapists are also involved in upper extremity management/positioning and providing additional equipment and helpful guidance in an effort to maximize function and ensure safety with daily tasks. Occupational therapy is initiated through a physician’s order. The occupational therapist may also have an active role in determining if additional care (short- or long-term placement, home with services, or outpatient care) may be warranted upon the patient’s discharge from acute care.
