The Leapfrog Group named Morton Hospital for the first time to its annual list of Top Hospitals. The announcement came at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting on December 3 in Arlington, Va., which gathered key decision-makers from Leapfrog's network of purchaser members, industry partners, health care stakeholders and national collaborators.
“We are proud to be among the highest-performing Top Hospitals across the country that are being recognized for their continuous commitment to putting patient care first,” said Morton Hospital President Kim Bassett, RN, BSN, MBA. “It is a great honor to be recognized for our safety and quality initiatives and to share this with our physicians and staff who work every day to provide safe, effective care to our patients and their families.”
Morton Hospital was one of only 90 hospitals across the country and seven in Massachusetts, including Morton Hospital’s sister hospital, Saint Anne’s Hospital, in Fall River, to be selected as a Top Hospital. A record number of 1,324 hospitals participated in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey. Hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.
“The field of hospitals considered for this year’s elite Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction was more competitive than ever. By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, Morton Hospital has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. If my family or friends needed care, I’d be comfortable sending them to Morton Hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer of The Leapfrog Group.
Morton Hospital was also awarded a third consecutive “A” grade in the Fall 2013 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families. All ten acute care hospitals in the Steward Health Care System (Steward) received an “A” safety and quality distinction.
“We are incredibly proud of these awards because they recognize our ongoing commitment to health care quality and safety,” said Justine Carr, MD, chief medical officer of Steward. “In the past three years, Steward has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in new services, new physicians, significant infrastructure improvements and new clinical technology to improve the quality of care and patient experience in our hospitals.”
Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 general U.S. hospitals were assigned scores this fall. A full analysis of the data and methodology used is available on the Hospital Safety Score website.
